Christmas Traditions

Storybook characters walk the streets of downtown, interacting with kids and handing out their "cards" so kids can collect them all (there are about 50). You'll also find carolers, and chestnut roasters and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Nov. 26 to Dec. 23: 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; 11 a.m to 9 p.m. Saturdays; noon to 5 on Sundays. Parade is at 1:30 on Saturdays and Sundays; evening processional at 8:45 Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. These Legends of Christmas are featured in a variety of other events, from Breakfast with Santa and a Yuletide Dinner to a marshmallow roast and evening readings of " ’Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Christmas in Kirkwood

Downtown Kirkwood's Holiday Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 19. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by Amtrak train at the historic train station, 110 East Argonne Avenue. Santa will pose for photos, while Mrs. Claus tells stories, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be carolers and refreshments at the station as well, while many stores have trunk shows and other specials. There's a performance by the Lucille Rapp Dance Studio at 2 p.m. , while the holiday trolley runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Kirkwood's a walkable place, and there's plenty of free public parking. Santa will make return appearances from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 1 and 8 (with a live reindeer!), and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 9.
