Holidays in Kirkwood • Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive in town at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 17 for Downtown Kirkwood's Holiday Walk. The jolly couple will come in by train and spend the day at the station, 110 East Argonne Avenue. Activities run until 3 p.m. and include stories from Mrs. Claus, live music and entertainment, free trolley rides, cookies and hot chocolate. The big elf will be back for photos on Dec. 6 and 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The surprisingly agile Claus will also strap on skates at Kirkwood Ice Arena, 111 South Geyer Road, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 15. Skate with Santa is free with regular admission.

Grab a bite • Grab a bite • It’s worth a detour from the main shopping drag to enjoy some fresh pastries at Nathaniel Reid Bakery, 11243 Manchester Road. Or pop into McArthur’s Bakery, 210 North Kirkwood Road. In Webster, warm up at the cozy Webster Groves Garden Cafe, 117 East Lockwood Avenue, or indulge in some bread pudding at Cyrano's, 603 East Lockwood Avenue.

Stores to check out • Your favorite gardener will appreciate anything you pick up from OK Hatchery, 115 East Argonne Drive, or the more off-kilter Bug Store, 113 West Argonne Drive. In Webster, Euclid Records’ rare albums and CDs are a treasure trove for any music lover, 19 North Gore Avenue. Literary types will love the Novel Neighbor, 7905 Big Bend Boulevard, for books and quirky knickknacks.

Christmas in Webster Groves • A candy cane hunt for the under-10 crowd will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 8 at Blackburn Park, 421 Edgar Road. Admission is $5 to $10 and includes prizes, hot chocolate and photos with Santa. The annual Holiday Cookie Walk will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 9 in the Old Webster Business District, which runs from Elm Avenue west to Lockwood Avenue to Rock Hill Road, and on North Gore Avenue from Lockwood to Kirkham Avenue. Participating shops will give out cookies and recipes.
