One man was killed and two others were critically injured when a car being chased by police struck another car near the corner of Bellefontaine Road and Chain of Rocks Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors, according to St. Louis County police. A wrongful death lawsuit filed in February 2022 identified the dead victim as Michael Hayes. Rico Bailey, 20, was charged in St. Louis County Circuit Court with second-degree murder, two counts of assault, tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. County police say they had been alerted by St. Louis city police about a stolen vehicle wanted in connection to a previous assault in the city. When county officers spotted the Infiniti Q70, they attempted to pull it over. Instead of stopping, the vehicle sped away. Police pursued the car for three miles until it struck the other vehicle.
