Devyn Trampe

A 39-year-old St. Louis man is accused of stealing a pickup truck from a Granite City home before fleeing police and causing a crash that led to the death of a 32-year-old man nearly a year later. Ronnell L. Welch, 39, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and reckless homicide in the death of 32-year-old Devyn Trampe, of St. Jacob. Welch was originally charged last year with aggravated fleeing police, among other felonies, but the charges were upgraded by a grand jury Thursday after the victim died. Charges accuse Welch of stealing a pickup truck from a Granite City woman's home on Nov. 14, 2022. Granite City police attempted to stop Welch in the stolen truck, but Welch is accused of driving off and eventually crashing into a truck at the intersection of Illinois Highway 3 and Rock Road in Granite City, according to a press release from Madison County State's Attorney Tom Haine's office. The other truck's driver, Trampe, was seriously injured and died nearly a year later in September of his injuries.
