Jason Weaver

A manslaughter charge against a former Ferguson QuikTrip gas station security guard was dismissed last week after a grand jury declined to indict him in the case. Maury Adams, 34, of Florissant, was charged last month with voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action after he shot and killed a 39-year-old customer during an Oct. 7 gun battle at the QuikTrip at 10768 West Florissant Avenue. All charges were dismissed after a grand jury on Nov. 8 found there was not enough evidence to indict Adams on the charges. St. Louis County prosecutors bring most serious felony cases they've already charged to a grand jury to judge if there's enough evidence for the case to move forward. Police said Jason Weaver was a customer and Adams was working security in the gas station store at about 1:30 a.m. the day of the shooting. The two got into a disagreement when Weaver failed to show an ID for an item he was trying to buy, Ferguson police said last month. Weaver left the store, but then returned. Police said video footage showed both men pulled guns on each other before Weaver shot the guard first. Charging documents alleged that Weaver then dropped the gun and ran down a hallway before the guard, Adams, followed and shot him several times while Weaver was on the floor with his hands raised. Weaver was pronounced dead at the scene. Adams was wearing a bulletproof vest and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Adams’ defense attorney Stephen Zarky said that from his initial look at the charges, he'd argue Adams’ actions would be considered self-defense under Missouri law.
