Daniel Hughes

Two men were slain minutes apart Monday night in north St. Louis. The first to die was Simeon Diaz, who was shot in the 4400 block of Elmbank Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. Then, just before 9 p.m., Daniel Hughes was fatally shot in the 1600 block of Hamilton Avenue. The scenes are three miles apart. St. Louis police said detectives have no suspects in either killing. Evita Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Police Department, said police don't think the shootings are connected. Diaz, 21, died at the scene on Elmbank. He lived in the 3100 block of West Clay Street in St. Charles. Hughes, 27, was taken in a private vehicle to a hospital, where he died. Police had no address for Hughes but said he lived in St. Louis.
