Leon Anderson

Prosecutors on charged a St. Louis County man with fatally shooting a man who they say confronted him about dating the same woman. Carlos Hood, 31, is facing charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action after prosecutors say he shot and killed the woman’s long-term boyfriend, Leon Anderson, 39, of St. Louis, inside her apartment near Highway 61 and Mexico Road in Wentzville. Police say Anderson, who died at the scene, had been dating the woman for off-and-on for about three years. Hood and the woman had been dating for about a week, according to court documents. According to police, the woman and Hood were in her bedroom when she heard someone knocking at her apartment door around 10 p.m. Tuesday. She told police she asked Hood to not answer the door. The person knocking began tapping on a window but she refused to open the window. She then recognized the person knocking on the window as her other boyfriend, Anderson, the woman told police. “(She) clarified that she was not expecting the victim to arrive to at her residence nor was he invited,” police wrote in the probable cause statement. The woman and Hood went downstairs to the main floor, where she heard Anderson forcefully entering the apartment through the bedroom window. The woman went upstairs and urged Anderson to leave and to not come downstairs but he followed her down to the main floor of the apartment. The two men then quarreled with each other over their relationship status with the woman. Then, the woman said she and Anderson went into the living room to talk, while Hood stood in the kitchen watching them. At no point did Anderson threaten herself or Hood, the woman told police. “(He) was wanting to get to the bottom of their relationship,” police wrote in court documents. While they were in the living room, Hood grabbed a gun and shot Anderson one time. Court documents do not specify where he was shot or where Hood found the gun. After being shot, Anderson shouted that the woman was his girlfriend and then fled the apartment. He collapsed in the parking lot. The woman said she ran after Anderson and did not see Hood run from her apartment. Hood, who was the subject of an hours-long manhunt, was later taken into custody around 4 a.m. by members of the Wentzville Police Department.
