A man was shot and killed after police say he charged at officers with a knife. The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. when a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper discovered an overturned vehicle in a ditch along the North Service Road of Interstate 44 in St. Clair. Police found a man inside holding a knife. The man refused orders to drop it before he came out and walked toward first responders, prompting a St. Clair police officer to shoot him, according to a statement from St. Clair police Chief Michael Wirt. The 28-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police did not identify the man on Monday but said he had identification showing he was from Honduras. Wirt said an investigation into the shooting is being led by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, per department policy. St. Clair, a city in Franklin County, is located about 50 miles west of St. Louis. St. Clair police, St. Clair EMS, St. Clair Fire Department personnel and additional troopers responded to the scene of the crash.
