The unidentified man died at a hospital after he was shot in the 700 block of East Sixth Street in Alton, according to Illinois State Police. An officer, Alan Averback, was injured in the shooting but is expected to recover, Alton city officials said in a Facebook post. Averback's police dog, Odin, died in a veterinary hospital, Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford said. Odin joined the department less than a year ago. Authorities have not released the name of the dead man. He may have been connected to an assault of a woman Wednesday night on East Broadway in Alton, more than a mile from Thursday's shootout. The shootout on East Sixth Street was reported about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Authorities have not said how many shots were fired. Police had been in the neighborhood, off Henry Street, since at least 5 a.m. Thursday, searching for the man who shot a woman Wednesday. Police noted that a man was spotted walking along Ridge Street, north of a liquor store. It wasn't clear if that man was the assault suspect or if he is the one who later died in the shootout. Haine said he was thankful the victim of Wednesday's assault was not gravely injured.
