James Carter died in a police shootout. Police killed Carter after police were alerted to a shooting detected by its ShotSpotter system. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man shot on the front porch. Carter, 61, came out to talk to cops and then went back inside. Moments later, he came out of the house again, this time armed with a rifle. He fired at officers, police said. One St. Louis police officer and one federal agent, from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, fired back at the man. The suspect went back inside the house. When SWAT officers entered the house, they found Carter dead near the front door. They also found a woman, Ariel Eastling, dead in the living room and a man, Tyrone Mason, dead in the basement.
