A Washington County deputy shot and killed a suspect who drove "directly at him" following a vehicle pursuit Wednesday, Sheriff Dwayne Reed says. Reed said in a statement that the deputy was pursuing the man because he was wanted for questioning regarding the assault of the man's girlfriend. In addition, Reed said, the man allegedly had stolen the vehicle he was driving from the girlfriend. Reed said the pursuit concluded when the suspect stopped behind an abandoned house on Furnace Creek Road. After the deputy got out of his patrol vehicle, he ordered the man to get out of his vehicle. Instead, Reed said, the man tried to flee in the vehicle but crashed into a tree after going a short distance. Reed said after the deputy again approached the suspect's vehicle and told him to get out, "the suspect's vehicle dislodged from the tree and drove directly toward the deputy." The deputy responded by shooting, striking the suspect multiple times. His vehicle then collided with the deputy's car. The man died at the scene. Reed said the Missouri Highway Patrol was investigating the incident. Reed didn't release the name of the suspect or the deputy. He said the deputy is a six-year corporal. Reed's statement didn't say specifically where on Furnace Creek Road the shooting took place or where the pursuit started. Washington County is about 60 miles south of St. Louis.
