ST. CHARLES — A St. Charles mother has been charged with first-degree murder after police say she shot her son while he slept and then stabbed him after he cried out, “Mommy.” Prosecutors here have also charged Krista Roy, 47, on Tuesday with one count of armed criminal action. Roy, who lives in the 3200 block of Lightfoot Drive, is in custody. According to court documents, she told police that she wanted to kill her son and then fatally shoot herself, and had stolen a handgun from her ex-husband’s house on Friday. She told police that she shot her son, 16, multiple times while he was sleeping. After shooting him, Roy described to police how she got into the bed and began caressing his body. She told investigators that she heard him say “Mommy” multiple times and that she left the bedroom, went to the kitchen, retrieved a knife and then stabbed the boy. Police say that Roy told them she did this to put him “out of his pain.” Investigators say that the victim's friends told them that he “loved life,” was not suicidal and his mother was “strange” and had minimal involvement in his life. Officials have not identified the victim, who is described in court documents as Roy’s son. According to court documents, St. Charles police were asked on Sunday and Monday to conduct a welfare check on the son, who had not been seen by his neighbors for several days. Neighbors told police that was “highly unusual behavior.” The son had last been seen at 2 a.m. on Saturday when a friend dropped him off at home in the same block of Lightfoot Drive as Roy’s address. The friend had attempted to contact the 16-year-old several times over the weekend but had not reached him, police said. Once at the residence, officers detected a foul odor and found the son's body in bed, with bullet and stab wounds. Investigators found a knife with “apparent blood on it” next to the son’s body. They also collected ballistic evidence at the scene that matched a Bersa pistol later found in Roy’s ex-husband’s home.
