WASHINGTON COUNTY, Mo. — A woman firing shots at sheriff's deputies was fatally struck by a patrol vehicle Monday night, authorities said. The Washington County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that the incident occurred near a convenience store in Springtown, an unincorporated area outside Potosi. The release said deputies were dispatched to a disturbance at the store. The first deputy to arrive told the woman to leave the premises. As she left the store, the release said, she pointed a handgun at her head and said she was going to kill herself. After the deputy ordered her to drop the gun, two more deputies arrived. She began running to and along Silverleaf Road as two deputies pursued her on foot, the release said. The release said she began firing at the deputies, and one deputy returned fire but didn't hit her. Another deputy responding in a vehicle encountered her as she continued firing and struck her with the vehicle, the release said. The release said deputies worked to contain the situation as quickly as possible. The woman's name has not yet been released. The site is about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis. The incident has been turned over to the Missouri Highway Patrol for investigation "in accordance with standard protocol," the release said.
