Timothy L. Johnston was shot and killed by six Jefferson County sheriff's deputies. Police were called to the scene after a resident said the man was banging on a door. A relative of Johnston said he was suicidal and had a drug problem, according to Sheriff Dave Marshak. When deputies got there, Johnston pointed a handgun at his head, Marshak said. Police called for backup, negotiators and a mental health crisis team. Negotiators talked to Johnston by phone for awhile, but Johnston eventually broke the phone he was using, Marshak said. Johnston stood on the highway as police tried to get him to surrender. He would walk some, then stop, Marshak said. More than 2½ hours into the standoff, Johnston fired a handgun at deputies and they shot him, Marshak said.
