Trinity Staten

A woman picked up by a rideshare driver early Tuesday was shot to death by a man on a bicycle who fired at the passing car, authorities said. Her boyfriend was charged in the murder. The woman, Trinity Staten, was shot in the 6100 block of North Broadway about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday. She had just been picked up by a rideshare driver when someone outside the vehicle fired at the car, said police Lt. John Blaskiewicz. The driver rushed the woman to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Staten, 29, lived in Normandy. Homicide detectives spent hours questioning Staten's boyfriend in police custody. By late afternoon, prosecutors had charged the man, Jeremie Northcross, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Northcross, 31, was riding a bicycle, circling a Lyft vehicle that his girlfriend got in, St. Louis police Officer Ian Csapo said in court papers. Police found ballistic evidence from a 9mm handgun at the scene. When police captured Northcross, he had apparently ditched the bicycle. But his vehicle, police said, was searched and 9mm ammunition was found inside the car. The driver of the rideshare vehicle was not injured. He worked for Lyft. A spokesperson for Lyft said in a statement, "This tragedy is heartbreaking. Our hearts are with the rider’s family and loved ones, and we’re grateful for the driver’s quick and courageous response." Lyft also said it has offered support to the driver and the victim's family and is assisting police in the investigation. Northcross lives in the 2000 block of Adelaide Avenue, less than a mile and on the opposite side of O'Fallon Park from where the shooting happened.
