Fidel Stewart

The shooting was about 11 p.m. near East Grand Avenue and North Second Street in the city's Near North Riverfront neighborhood. No officers were hurt. Police later said the man was 64-year-old Fidel Stewart of Overland. Mary Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis County Police Department, said county officers were alerted to a ShotSpotter activation at 10:49 p.m. in 8400 block of Lucas and Hunt Road. They saw a vehicle speed off and followed it. The chase entered the city and ended in north St. Louis, where county police shot the man. They said he was armed with a gun. "The truck was forced to stop because of a train," Mitch McCoy, a St. Louis police spokesman, said. "The suspect exited his vehicle. At some point, a firearm was pulled, and St. Louis County officers fired their weapons at the suspect." The shooting was east of the train tracks and near the Procter & Gamble plant on East Grand Avenue. Stewart died at the scene. St. Louis police said they recovered his gun.
