KaMaurie Gibson, 16, of Pine Lawn, died at a hospital after the June 4 shooting, said Capt. Michael Lang, assistant chief for the North County Police Cooperative. Lang said the shooting took place about 5 p.m. that day in the 6400 block of Wellsmar Avenue. Lang said the victim was shot on the street. "We're trying to determine all the facts," Lang said. He said police are investigating the incident as a potential crime, but that it's also possible it was accidental. He and Chief John Buchannan declined to comment further on the investigation. KaMaurie's mother, Leona Robinson, said her son was "a good kid." "He would help anybody, he would de-escalate situations," she said. She said her son, who took online classes in the Normandy School District, had hoped to eventually work as a truck driver and to rehab houses. She added that she was a devoted brother to his siblings. "I want everyone to know that his life mattered," she said. KaMaurie's father, Kevin Gibson, added that he had worked part-time for a cleaning company, including at Chaifetz Arena after St. Louis University basketball games. Robinson and Gibson said the family doesn't know exactly how the shooting occurred and have been given varying accounts by different people. "We don't think he got shot intentionally," Gibson said.
