Mariah R. Fearn

Mariah R. Fearn, 32, of Alton, died at the scene of the shooting and beating, 3416 Milton Drive in Alton. A man, Patrick Greenwell, was taken by medical helicopter to a St. Louis hospital. Court documents say Greenwell suffered from gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma to his head. He told officers he was beaten with a hammer. John A. Hammond, 46, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender. Alton police Lt. Andrew Pierson said Hammond and the victims were acquaintances. Pierson would not say what led to the attack.
