Mary Jackson

The dead woman was identified as 67-year-old Mary Jackson. The suspected gunman, a 68-year-old man, was her boyfriend, and was in critical but unstable condition, police said. His name was not released. Police were called about 8 p.m. to the 5700 block of Waterman Boulevard for an argument between a man and a woman in which the man was reported to be armed, police said. Upon arrival, officers saw the two people on a porch and ordered the man to show his hands, police said. The man then turned and shot the woman, Maj. Janice Bockstruck said. The officer fired at the suspect, and the suspect shot back at the officer, police said. No officers were injured. Police retreated to a tactical position and again exchanged gunfire with the man who then went inside the house. Police then took the female victim from the porch to provide medical attention. Officers then entered the house where they found the man inside suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman died at an area hospital, while the man is in critical and unstable condition. The officer who fired shots is 34 and a seven-year veteran. "What you see in that bodycam video is an officer responding to a call of a woman who needed help and that officer doing everything he possibly could to eliminate the threat of a guy that was firing shots," police spokesman Mitch McCoy said, referencing bodycam footage that he viewed. "It is nothing short of heroic of these officers that responded here tonight, and that officer who engaged the suspect on a couple of different times." Police say they recovered the suspect’s gun and that force investigation detectives are handling the investigation.
