Aya Sofia

A decade after opening in Lindenwood Park, chef Mehmet Yildiz’s Aya Sofia remains a singular St. Louis restaurant. It’s elegant — romantic even — but not expensive. The Turkish fare touches on familiar flavors from other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, but it’s still not quite like anything else in town. Grilled beef, lamb and seafood dishes dominate the menu — I like the iskender, beef and lamb accented with yogurt and tomato sauce — though you might be tempted to build a meal out of the hot and cold mezze. I especially recommend the biber ezme, a bright, garlicky roasted-red-pepper dip.

Chef Mehmet Yildiz and Architect-Designer Alicia Aboussie joined forces to launch Aya Sofia in October of 2005. Their collaboration has yielded the finest Turkish cuisine St. Louis has to offer. The menu features an array of contemporary Mediterranean dishes and classic Middle Eastern and Lebanese cuisine as well as authentic Turkish Entrees, some dating back to Ottoman times and the middle ages. Hot and cold meze, small plates that are perfect to share with that special someone, are also offered. There is a beautiful full-service bar, with an impressive list of internationally renowned wines, a variety of martinis, and a special selection of domestic and imported beers. Decorated in warm colors and lush fabrics, this restaurant creates a luxurious atmosphere that will truly satisfy your senses. For romantic dining with an international flair, this Turkish and Mediterranean destination restaurant is a must.

Aya Sofia is known for its' seafood and lamb dishes. Chef Mehmet is originally from Bergama, Izmir, Turkey and loves to cook fresh seafood and lamb. One of the house specialties is Cupra - as this was Chef Mehmet's favorite fish growing up. This fish is imported from the Aegean Sea and is served whole, flame grilled, with a side of onion sumac salad, and pearl couscous. There are also lamb chops (Firinda Kuzu), lamb shank (Kuzu Incik), a whole roasted lamb dish (Firinda Kuzu), lamb meatballs (Kofte), and the spiciest dish on the menu, the lamb kebob (Adana Kebab). There are many Vegetarian and Gluten free options to try as well. There is something for everyone at Aya Sofia.
