Comet Coffee & Microbakery

How good are the croissants at Comet Coffee & Microbakery, how flaky and buttery? So good that owners Mark Attwood and Stephanie Fischer have opened a satellite location to feature the croissants as well as espresso drinks and, in season, ice cream. The original location displays all of Comet’s baked goods, from those croissants to the sweet (the lemon-poppyseed scones are my favorite) to the savory (the Lithuanian Bacon Bun, a single-dish breakfast) to the seasonal (be sure to stop by during the brief pawpaw season). Comet doesn’t roast its own coffee but features beans from major third-wave roasters nationwide.

Hours: 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday (Kirkwood location open 7-11 a.m. Wednesday-Sunday, closed Monday-Tuesday)

Opened: 2012

Must order: Butter croissant ($2.75)
