Eric Koechling

Officers were called to a shooting scene in the 2600 block of Breakwater Drive about 9 p.m. Police said it began as a domestic disturbance between a recently divorced couple. They found Eric Koechling, 61, sitting in a lawn chair, holding a towel against his chest to try to control bleeding. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said he was taken to a hospital, where he died. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday and should determine if the shot is what killed him. Police said the suspect was his ex-wife, 63-year-old Catherine M. Koechling. She barricaded herself in her home across the street from the lawn chair, authorities said. Deputies surrounded the home and called in SWAT. The standoff continued for several hours, police said, until she surrendered. Catherine Koechling was charged with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action. Charges could be upgraded, depending on what the autopsy reveals.
