The House Springs woman and her teenage daughter who were shot in the head and critically injured have been taken off life support a few days after the shooting. Friends and family stood by at Mercy Hospital South on Monday as gurneys took Jessica Lashly, 38, and her daughter Jersey Greer, 17, to an awaiting ambulance for organ donation with Mid-America Transplant. "We said our final goodbyes. It was a heroes' walk," Jersey's aunt, Christina Greer, said Tuesday. "Those hallways were lined." Outside the hospital, the crowd formed a circle and said a prayer. They included teammates who played lacrosse with Jersey, an incoming senior at Northwest High School near Cedar Hill. "It looked like the whole high school was there," said another aunt, Sara Lashly. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that prosecutors have now upgraded criminal charges against a neighbor of Lashly and her daughter. The neighbor, Robert Winkelman, 73, was originally charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. The sheriff said prosecutors amended those charges to murder. Police said Winkelman shot himself in the head after shooting Jessica Lashly and Jersey. He died on Aug. 2, the sheriff's department said. The shooting was around 8:30 p.m. July 25 in a neighborhood in House Springs. Winkelman lived on Dellwood Lane, catty-corner to a split-level home on Doetzel Court where Jessica Lashly and her daughters lived. Investigators said Winkelman walked to Lashly's home and began questioning people there about their activities. Police think the dispute was over a noise complaint. Winkelman had had ongoing frustrations, police said, about what people were doing at the home. Jessica Lashly made a comment and he shot her; Jersey tried to help her mom, and he shot her, too, police said. Winkelman had lived on Dellwood for years, and Lashly moved into the home on Doetzel about two years ago. One neighbor said Winkelman was upset with the way they maintained their property. Another said Winkelman was angry that the Lashly family parked numerous vehicles, including a truck without wheels, behind their house, within eyesight of Winkelman's home. The family was trying to replace an axle on the truck. “Still ain’t feel real,” said Jacob Lashly, brother of Jessica, as he stood on the family's front porch Tuesday, looking at Winkelman's home about 100 yards away. Jacob Lashly, from Catawissa, Missouri, said the family hadn't had many dealings with Winkelman. Jacob Lashly's dog ran away once. He found the dog in Winkelman's yard, with Winkelman trying to kick the dog to shoo it away. No one answered Tuesday at Winkelman's home, decorated with potted cactus and hummingbird feeders. Reached by phone, his wife, Paula, declined comment. Jessica Lashly was a single mom of identical twin girls. She was a smart woman who worked hard for the family's tree service, said Sara Lashly, Jersey's aunt and Jessica's sister-in-law. "She didn't want to sit in an office," Sara Lashly said of Jessica, in an interview Tuesday. "She was goofy. She was a good time. She and her two girls, they were always together." Jersey played lacrosse at Northwest High. "She was very sweet, easy to talk to," Sara Lashly said of her niece. "She was getting ready to go into her senior year. She worked hard, played sports. I don't know how she had the time to do everything." The school's lacrosse program is raising money to help support the family. Donations reached more than $43,000 by Tuesday night. The twin sister, Justice, was at work when the shooting happened. Sara Lashly said she is grateful Justice wasn't at home with her sister and mom, for fear she would have been shot as well. Usually with the twins, "where you found one, you found the other." Sara Lashly said she is heartbroken by the deaths, and for the surviving twin. "That poor baby," she said. "She just lost her whole world right there."
