John R. Haynes, 69, of the Winfield area, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Missouri Highway Patrol SWAT team members, the patrol said. Haynes came to the front door of a residence and pointed a gun at SWAT team troopers, the patrol said in a news release. A trooper was struck by gunfire in the trooper's ballistic helmet but wasn't injured. The incident, on Pinewood Drive west of Winfield, took place several hours after Lincoln County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the home involving an alleged assault. Deputies made contact with Haynes, who they believed was armed, but he retreated into the residence, the patrol said. A standoff ensued. The sheriff's department in an earlier news release Wednesday morning said a woman was "safely removed" from the residence and was receiving medical attention for injuries.
