Lamonte Keys

A 26-year-old north St. Louis County man was accused of fatally shooting another man and injuring two other people following fights at a birthday gathering at a park in Berkeley, authorities said. Devion J. Sneed, of the 6100 block of Sheringham Place near Black Jack, was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Lamonte Keys, 32, of Berkeley, on Thursday afternoon. Sneed also faces charges related to the shooting of a woman identified in court records as M.R. and the shooting of another person listed as C.K. Maj. Steve Runge, Berkeley's acting police chief, said in an interview that police were called to Ramona-Mathison Lake Park about the shootings at about 5:20 p.m. Thursday. He said that after two small children got close to the lake, some women at the gathering started yelling at some men because they weren't watching the kids. Runge said that apparently offended someone and two women got into a fist fight. Runge said two men then began fighting and one of them, Sneed, went to his car, grabbed an assault rifle and shot Keys, then fled the scene. In all, Runge said, one woman and three men were shot, including Sneed and Keys. Runge said all four were taken to a hospital. Keys was the only one who died. see note Runge said because everyone involved knew each other, "we were able to wrap the case up pretty quickly."
