Prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 19-year-old in a shootout this week outside of a North St. Louis market that left one man dead and three others injured. Preshon Thomas, of St. Louis, is accused of opening fire Tuesday evening on a Chevrolet Malibu outside of the Gateway Market, at 3016 Martin Luther King Drive. Charges say that at around 6:20 p.m., a woman pulled up to the market in the Malibu. Her brother was riding in the front passenger seat. Surveillance video from the scene showed four men, including Thomas, approaching the market from across the street. They came up to the Malibu and talked to each other, charges say. Eventually, one of the men — a 35-year-old — went inside the store. He came back outside, pulled a gun out of his waistband and began firing at the car, charges say. The man in the passenger seat fired back through the windshield, at which point Thomas and another man also started firing, charges say. The 35-year-old man then fell to the ground. Thomas and another man fell, too. A fourth man ran away, as did the man in the Malibu's passenger seat after grabbing Thomas' gun, charges say. The 35-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has still not been released. Thomas and another man were taken to a hospital for their injuries. The man in the Malibu also returned to the scene and was taken to the hospital. Thomas was charged with second-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
