At 10:56 a.m., according to police, officers got a call about a man waving a pole downtown near Broadway and Locust Street. A bike officer first encountered the man near Olive Street and Broadway. The man threw a cup of coffee at the officer and then ran away, police spokesman Mitch McCoy said at a news conference. Other officers caught up to the man and hit him with a taser, but that did not stop him, McCoy said. Police repeatedly told him to drop the pole, which looked like a white pole for a pop-up tent, McCoy said. The man then ran into the parking lot across from the now-closed Pear Tree Inn, near Washington Avenue and Broadway, where he charged at one officer. The officer fired multiple shots, McCoy said. Seconds later, the man pulled out a chef's knife and charged again, McCoy said. The officer again fired, hitting the man. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, McCoy said. A white metal pole with what appeared to be blood on it and a knife could be seen lying on the ground with evidence markers in the middle of the scene. Police said they also seized a stun gun from the man. McCoy said the encounter was caught on body camera and dash camera video.
