Ryan Cerentano

The man shot by police Monday on a rooftop in Granite City died two days after he was shot five times, his wife, Amber Cerentano, said. The St. Louis Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Ryan Cerentano, 40, died at St. Louis University Hospital. Cerentano was shot by officers as he was on the roof of the family's home, about two blocks from City Hall in Granite City. Granite City police were called about 10:30 a.m. to Cerentano's home on Edison Avenue for a report of an armed suspect. The man was spotted on the roof of a home at 2148 Edison Avenue, pacing and talking loudly. Illinois State Police said officers saw the man was armed with a handgun and a long gun, later found to be a replica. An officer from Granite City and another from the sheriff's office shot the man after he refused to put down his weapons, Illinois State Police said. Cerentano fell off the roof, critically injured, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police haven't said if Cerentano fired any shots. According to court documents, Ryan Cerentano was a felon, with criminal convictions from various counties in southern Illinois. He had arrests for crimes including methamphetamine offenses and assault. Amber Cerentano, 37, works around the corner from her home. Her boss told her that Edison Avenue was blocked off, so she left work to check on her home. As she neared her property, she said, she saw her husband covered in blood. Amber Cerentano, who married him in 2018, said her husband was mentally ill. "But there was nothing violent," she said. "He struggled with bipolar and anxiety." He worked as a concrete laborer and had three children, ranging in age from 21 to 9. Amber Cerentano filed for divorce in March, but they reconciled. This month, she filed for an order of protection against him. In her Aug. 16 petition for the order of protection, the wife said her husband "started going crazy" and accused her of cheating. Amber's mother, Sherie Skaggs of Granite City, said some people on social media "are making him out to be a monster" and applauding police for killing him. "He really wasn't a monster," Skaggs said. "Just a guy who didn't have insurance to get his medication. He was just fighting a battle in his own head." Brent Muenstermann, one of Ryan's younger brothers, said Ryan was a recovering addict and had started helping people leaving rehab by giving them some spending money and clothing. Muenstermann said he had talked his brother "off the ledge" several times over the years when Ryan was distraught. Muenstermann said he doubts police took the time to talk with him before shooting him.
