Gioia's Deli

When a restaurant has been open just shy of a century, it’s tough to single out any one year as especially momentous. In the case of Gioia’s Deli, though, the last 12 months will be tough to top. In April 2016, the Hill institution opened a second location downtown. (This followed owner Alex Donley introducing a food truck a few years ago.) Then, in January, the James Beard Foundation announced that Gioia’s and its signature hot salami had won its prestigious “America’s Classics” award, which recognizes regional restaurants that are “treasured for their quality food, local character and lasting appeal.” Then again, when you’re slinging one of St. Louis’ best and most distinctive sandwiches, you don’t need to worry about topping one great year. You just keep doing what you do.
