While downtown has a lot to offer, it isn’t exactly a retail epicenter. But nestled among the countless restaurants, bars and other fun attractions (many of which sell branded merchandise and other keepsakes) are a few gems where you can find gifts with personality and style. And there’s plenty to see and do, especially around the holidays.

Things to do
Christmas downtown
The season officially kicks off at 8:45 a.m. Nov. 23, when the Thanksgiving Day parade makes its way down Market Street with more than 130 entries — floats, giant balloons, marching bands and an early appearance by Santa Claus. Also enjoy holiday lights at Kiener Plaza and Citygarden; Polar Express train rides at Union Station (Nov. 24-Dec. 30, stlthepolarexpressride.com); and ice skating at Winterfest at the Arch (through Jan. 1, archwinterfest.com).
Grab a bite
At the MX, check out great offerings from three of St. Louis’ most notable dining empires: Sugarfire Smoke House (605 Washington Avenue), which makes a mean beef brisket; Pi Pizzeria (610 Washington Avenue), where you can get a thin-crust pizza or the distinctive deep-dish; and Porano Pasta (634 Washington Avenue), the fast-casual spot by James Beard Award-winning chef Gerard Craft.
Take a break
Drop by Union Station for a cocktail (or a cup of coffee) in the magnificent Grand Hall, which puts our own holiday decorating to shame. And from 5 to 11 p.m., on the hour, catch a special holiday-themed digital video projection on the hall’s ornate, barrel-vaulted ceiling.
Grab a map
Explore St. Louis has two downtown visitor information centers, where you can pick up brochures or speak to a helpful volunteer: Old Courthouse (11 North Fourth Street) and America’s Center (Seventh Street and Washington Avenue).
Getting around
The walkable neighborhood has lots of street and garage parking. And Metro’s Downtown Trolley runs daily. Unlimited-use all-day tickets, available on the trolley and at the downtown visitor center, are $1 for children, seniors and the disabled, $2 for adults and free for ages 4 and under. Find the route and schedules at metrostlouis.org.
